An RSPCA branch says it is struggling to cope with a dramatic increase in the number of abandoned animals.

Inspectors from the RSPCA Middlesex North West, which covers Harrow, say they are dealing with unprecedented number of unwanted pets.

Examples include two guinea pigs left in the street in their cage and hamsters being thrown out with the rubbish.

Animal welfare officer Tracy Deemer said: "This summer has got to be by far the worst year for us, dealing with dumped and abandoned pets."

Aileen Scheers, from the RSPCA Middlesex North West Branch, said: "It is completely unacceptable to treat an animal like this.

"It is irresponsible and frankly cruel to dump a pet, and I dread to think what could have happened to them.

"The RSPCA have come across cases where kittens have been used as dog fighting bait, or who’ve simply starved to death.

"I am pleased to say that in this case both mum and kittens are doing well, and will be looking for a new home soon."

The branch currently has more than 200 animals in its care, including hamsters, kittens and rabbits, which are all in need of a new home.
