A college celebrated the opening of a new building today.

Mayor of Harrow Councillor Ajay Maru cut the ribbon at Stanmore College, in Elm Park.

Cllr Maru, college principal Jacqui Mace and former student Sushil Wadhwani celebrated the beginning of the college’s new chapter.

Cllr Maru said: "It is wonderful that we have new facilities that will not only help the youngsters of today, but the leaders of tomorrow."

The building includes a creative arts department and a fitness sports space. Student social areas have also been expanded and now include a student lounge and four additional classrooms.

Student Sahar Kashef, 18, said "During the design process of the building, all the students were given the chance to vote about what colours and what furniture should be used. It was really good how both staff and students were able to contribute to this."

Prominent figures from the board of governors and leading companies also gathered around to celebrate the occasion.

Ms Mace expressed her delight at being able to help the young people of today in Harrow and around the local area.

Mr Wadhwani, now a chief executive officer for Wadhwani Asset Management added: "I have happy memories of this place from 1976. Stanmore College is and I am sure continues to be, at the forefront of being a welcoming environment that encourages students to excel to the best of their ability."
