A man who found a dog wandering the streets is offering £300 of his own money to reunite him with his owner.

Somerset man Alan Wood was driving past Stanmore Station at around 5am on Tuesday, May 19 when he noticed an Akita – a large breed of dog from Japan – wandering along the pavement.

As the dog was clearly out alone without its owner, he decided to pull over and take the dog in.

He said: “I just parked up and pretended to be dead to get him to come near me without thinking I was threatening him.

“He understands basic commands and English, and he’s clearly been well taught because he was so placid and is as calm as a cucumber.”

The dog is estimated to be around two or three, has not been micro-chipped and was found without a collar.

He is a light beige colour, with dark markings around his eyes, ears and muzzle and is now staying with a friend of Mr Wood’s in Radlett until his owner can be traced.

Mr Wood said: “I’ve put posters up everywhere, knocked on hundreds of doors, spoken to vets, even spoken to the milkman, the postman, the bin man, the councils, everyone.

“I even took him back to the same area and let him loose, and we walked by Canons Park and through the streets in the hope he’d lead me back to his home.

“I don’t want to give him up to the dog wardens, so I will go to the world’s end to find his owner.”

The dog-lover has also offered a reward of £300 of his own money to reunite the Akita with his owner, and hopes that anyone who may know who he belongs to will come forward to help.

He added: “He’s just so sad without his owners. He’s got no interest playing with the toys that I’ve bought him and hardly touches his food.

“You can see it in his eyes, he’s just so upset – I just want to know where he comes from.”

Anyone with information about the dog is asked to call Alan Wood on 07853 279226.
