Children could be left with nowhere to go if a childcare service cannot find a new premises.

Welldon Park Infant and Junior schools, in Wyvenhoe Road, South Harrow, are preparing to amalgamate and expand this year.

The expansion will include new purpose-built classrooms, but until these are ready a breakfast and after school club that uses the junior school’s 'little hall' will be forced to move out.

The club, run by Melissa Heffer and Jayne Beech, will continue to run at the school until July 17, but is appealing for help finding a new site for the following year.

Melissa Heffer said: “We never have any less than 20 children a day, and can have anything up to 30 kids from the school.

“If I don’t find anywhere suitable to go then the parents will have to look for alternative arrangements for their child, and I don’t think there are any other services like ours around here.

“My main concern is the children and the parents because they have been incredibly loyal and we don’t want to move far away and let them down.”

The club is now searching for an alternative site, but staff say they have struggled to find anywhere affordable.

Miss Heffer added: “We’re mainly looking at church halls for the space, but so far everything I have seen has been far too expensive.

“We’re a privately-run company and we don’t get any government grants. All the money we earn comes from the parents and everything just goes straight back in to the club and the children, so we can’t afford to move anywhere too costly.”

In a letter to parents, headteacher Gwenda Caroli explained that the club would not be running at the school from September 2015 to July 2016, with no holiday club – which the group also runs - until Christmas 2016 at the earliest.

She added: “We appreciate this change is inconvenient for parents and disappointing for children.

“We therefore pledge that, as soon as the new governing body is in place, we will look very seriously at alternative options and accommodation that we can use for child care.”

A Harrow Council spokesman said: “Harrow Council is committed to providing a fair start in life for every child at a good, local school. Our borough is facing one of the biggest increases in school-age children anywhere in the country – and our top priority is to provide modern, permanent facilities for each and every one of them.

“The council does not want schools to lose out on facilities when they expand. That is why we are working with the Welldon Park Schools on plans for millions of pounds of investment in new classrooms and facilities that will be built in 2016. We will be consulting the general public on plans for these buildings very shortly.

“Until these new buildings are approved and completed, there will be some temporary disruption. We would like to thank all our school communities for their patience and understanding.”
