A Harrow MP will consider using extra security measures at his surgeries after the fatal attack on Jo Cox last week.

Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed outside her constituency surgery in West Yorkshire on Thursday.

A 52-year-old man, Thomas Mair, has been charged with her murder.

Labour MP for Harrow West, Gareth Thomas, said he would consider additional safety measures after MPs were urged to review their security arrangements by police shortly after the attack.

“I will continue to do my surgeries and lead a public life – I think it’s important to be seen to be around,” he said.

“But I will follow the future security advice offered to protect the welfare of my staff and constituents.

“There are incidents like this in all walks of life – we can’t be seen to be held back by what’s happened to Jo.

“MPs have an important job to do, and most people are respectful even if they disagree with the decisions I have taken.”

Mr Thomas first met Mrs Cox when he was shadow minister for Africa and the Middle East, and she worked with international charity Oxfam.

“She was destined for a bright future even then,” he said.

“She was a real livewire and picked up causes in Parliament which really struck a chord. She was very passionate about development.

“I think she would have gone on to do great things for the Labour Party.”

He said that despite her obvious political talent, the saddest thing about Jo’s death was the loss sustained by her family. Jo leaves behind her husband Brendan and their two young children.

“To lose her so young and so early in her career is a tragedy but first and foremost she is a mother and a wife,” he said.

“I just feel devastated for her family.”
